*More Shame pt.1 Sheldon Powell & Company

I've been archiving a bunch of records from my collection which happens to fill 61.3% of my studio apartment. Anyways, I love looking at production and writer credits on record sleeves & labels.
This Sheldon Powell & Company 45 was written by Sylvia Robinson which happens to be the founder of Sugarhill Records.
Enjoy..

*Discovery*

Discovery is an experimental pop group with disco, Latin, and prog rock influences that performs often in NYC. Always Discovery's approach has been to keep it funky. Discovery has been said to straddle Tropicalia and post-punk genres equally with comparisons ranging from Maximum Joy and Teena Marie to Hot Chip and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The group is not a rock band, per se--there is no guitar player in the group at present time. Focus on the bass grooves and drum rhythms for infectious, danceable fun. Vocalist Kathleen Cholewka sings with rock bravado and yet can emote in an intimate cabaret-like style. Lex Marsh's synth tones and Bridget Fitzgerald's string lines heighten the mood. Lyrics range from the abstract and dark, dreamy and suggestive to the provocative and direct. Along with originals, Discovery also lovingly chooses covers to perform including Laura Nyro's Stoney End, Debbie Deb's When I Hear Music, The Rolling Stones Under My Thumb, and Smokey Robinson's Baby That's Backatcha. Visit myspace.com/thisisdiscovery to hear live tracks.

Discovery's first album of ten tracks called Pushy was released mid-year in 2010. It is available on cdbaby and iTunes. The group is now enlisting some of NYC's music specialists to remix some of their tracks. The most recent is DJ Alfreako's Moonlight Mix of Starmagic now available on 7" vinyl and via DanceCampMusic.com.

Discovery started in vocalist Kathleen Cholewka's dark Brooklyn basement in 2004 and had its first performance later that year. Over the years the group's line up has included notable NYC players. Original and past members include guitarist Don Stahl, and keyboardist Lindsay Kaye. At one point Patrick Wood of Phenomenal Handclap Band was drumming in Discovery. Marsh who joined early on to add additional bass, sax and keyboard sounds, is now writing much of Discovery's music with Cholewka. David Smith, a much sought-after trombonist, joined and played on Discovery's album Pushy. David Scott of Guru's Jazzamatazz continues to add his virtuosity to the mix via percussion and flute. And currently Julliard grad Fitzgerald's viola playing brings unique and intense textures.

*The Indies of The West..

The annual West Indian Day Parade which is held in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn NY is always a site to see. With the combination of raging Soca music, elaborate carnival costumes worn by mega dancing machine paraders, incredibly tasty caribbean food & an assortment of vendors selling cultural goods makes for a splendid day. It's a piece of New York that everyone looks forward to at the end of the summer season in the concrete jungle.

**Vamos A La Playa**

La Playa Sextet sounds like one of those relaxing 1950s tropical beach front hotel scenes from a period film. This song is off a re-issue 7''

**Bostonians Are Trippy Too**

I've had this 7'' of a while. The feature song I dig on this is called "K One Hour" released in 1993 on Lunar Rotation Records out of Boston.
It's trippy, errie & yet beautiful.
Recorded at Vortex Studios, Vermont: Oct '93
::Cul de Sac, a band whose name was taken from a Roman Polanski film, is Boston's original post rock granddaddy formed in 1989. They continue to record, release music & tour.

*Dick Beats & Hard House Bootlegs*

I've been a on a steady vinyl archiving pace over the past few weeks & I keep coming across these early house bootleg comp 12''s with songs I know I will never hear anyone play.
Here's one of the records. I like the entire side & of course 4am is a very under rated classic.
This particular song is called
"Dick Beats" produced by Techno & Datboy on Tech Grooves Vol. 1..

**She-Rockers Jams, Professor Griff Samples, Carly Simon Just Stands There**

English Hip-Hop duo She-Rockers made a string of 12'' singles for Jive records & Music of Life label in the early 90's. One of their bigger songs (Give It A Rest) was produced by Public Enemy's former lead S1W & controversial figure Professor Griff.
The thing about this song is that he jacked Carly Simon's early 80's hit "Why" which at the time was remixed by Chic band members & writers Bernard Edwards & Nile Rodgers. It eventually became a Paradise Garage classic after Larry Levan started throwing the remix as a part of his dj sets..

*One of Many 12'' Bootlegs From Brooklyn's Beat Street Records Store*

Disco Dub is a bootleg 12'' I got in the early 90's & I still love it. If you're a head or a dj that buys re-issues or still goes to NYC's Rock & Soul Records store to get 12''bootleg disco/funk/NYC party thrown down singles then you own this 12'' with the green label, I got mine from the legendary but now defunk Beat Street Records.

*DanceCamp* Presents:: Retro-MPC Beat-Strumentals Lp..

This is a compilation of 19 homemade hip-hop tracks from Alfonzie's hefty stack of 3.5 floppy disks. Mostly based around funk/jazz record samples with an occasional sci-fi twist accompanied by audio clips & b-film dialogue. All tracks were made mostly during 2005-2009 on the classic Akai MPC 2000XL drum machine sampler along with sprinkles of live instrumentation.

*Tierra Disco's Answer To A Ship Cruise Lounge Cover Band*

I've always enjoyed the Latin influenced disco music, lots of horn arrangements ect...but never the less exciting & pulsating!
Tierra is an early-'70s spin-off group from El Chicano, Tierra kept plugging away until 1980, when they scored some brief success on the R&B charts doing Afro-Latin-flavored soul covers...
Here's one of the more uptempo selections:: Latin Disco
